(2000-2003) Zan started In September of 2000 by members David Huber (Guitar), Justin G Dog Fubsy Malloy Traveller (Bass), and J.J.(Drums). Each were in a band known as Nemesis, which has since split into several different local bands around the Tri Cities. Zan originally had two guitar players, a bassist, a drummer, and a percussionist (really just a conga player). David was the main vocalist in the beginning, until Ace was added as the main vocalist a short while later. The first 7 original songs written by Zan were straight metal (no odd rhythms or time signatures) and clean vocals, the overall sound being influenced mainly by Korn, Mudvayne, Slipknot, System of a Down and Soul Fly. This was "Phase 1" of Zan's song writing style. Zan remained a 6 member band and played shows locally until around May or June of 2001, when the conga player was sent on his separate way. In August of that year, Jason shipped off to basic training in the U.S. Army. Zan continued to practice together during Jason's short trips back home on leave. During his two year service, the second guitar player was dropped. While on this short hiatus, each band member acquired newer and much, much better sounding equipment, and September of 2003, J.J. returned to continue as drummer. (2003-2005) Near the end of those two years, David wrote what would become Zan's very first song with odd timing, "Paternal Advisory". This was the beginning of "Phase 2" writing style, which incorporated high screams with clean vocals and increasingly more technical riff changes and time signatures. Zan would continue with a mixture of the old "Phase 1" and "Phase 2" styles. (2006-2008) In mid-December of 2005, Justin Traveller took a job opportunity in Utah, and left the band. David continued to write songs, but for the most part Zan was again on hiatus. Each of the remaining members used this time to work on side projects; Ace and David joining with members of Meralgia (Vivisection) to form Sand, while Jason filled the drummer slot for the bands Androcles and later Honor Amongst Thieves. David also worked on a one man project known as Rotareneg Cisum, using Music Generator to create ridiculously extreme death metal. Jason also worked with Micheal Evans to create a "Tool Clone" band named Divinus Requiem. Jason also joined the band The Festering, which would later pick up David as the rhythm guitarist. It was during this time that the decision was made to drop all of the "straight" songs in the set. With the advent of true death metal in the Tri-Cities (Thanks to Meralgia), Zan was quickly being influenced into a heavier, more "death metal sound". Zan shed older influences for more the more extreme styles of Meshuggah, Mastodon, The Black Dahlia Murder, Nile, etc. While other bands tend to shift towards a "softer" sound as they age, Zan would only strive to push the envelope further. This can be described as "Phase II 1/2", with less clean vocals, "jent" style riffs, and epic song length. (2008-2010) After a three year hiatus and much more experience under each member's belts, Zan reached "Phase 3" writing style. All clean vocals we're abandoned for an impressive range of high screams, low growls, and soul shattering yells straight from the diaphragm. Blast beats were now being implemented. Riffs were becoming less melodic and more frantic and percussive. Without being able to fill the bass player slot, it was decided that Zan should return to the stage as a three piece. Soon after this decision, Matt Messinger from Jacky White offered to play bass, and for a short while, was added to the line-up mid 2009. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts and family priorities, he was unable to continue after only six months. Zan continued to play shows as a three piece. In early summer of 2010, Chase McClendon, vocalist of All Gussied Up, offered to play 2nd guitar. With an eight string guitar, this added a much needed "mid tone" to the band's sound. Zan is now described as having one of the most intense and pummeling sounds in the Tri-Cities.
